Pjotr Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake – State Opera Varna Ballet
The renowned State Opera Varna Ballet brings Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake to Finland!
Tchaikovsky’s beloved Swan Lake comes to Finland performed by the State Opera Varna Ballet, founded in 1947. The ballet, also presented at Promenadisali, features a choreographic adaptation by Sergei Bobrov. His interpretation preserves the original spirit of the work while highlighting the importance of Tchaikovsky’s music in conveying the story and its characters.
SWAN LAKE
Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow in 1877. It achieved its status as a timeless classic particularly following the 1895 production at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, featuring choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. More than a century after its creation, this masterpiece is still considered by many to be the most beautiful ballet in the world.
Swan Lake tells a story of love and the eternal struggle between light and darkness, symbolised by the ballet’s white and black swans.
Sergei Bobrov’s staging for the State Opera Varna Ballet draws on the classical tradition, reintroducing elements of the original score, libretto and choreography. At the same time, Bobrov seeks to preserve the dramatic role of Tchaikovsky’s music and the original spirit of the work.
The role of Prince Siegfried is performed by the Ukrainian dancer Danylo Motkov, just 20 years old, who has already danced numerous leading roles during the State Opera Varna Ballet’s international tours across Europe. The dual role of Odette and Odile is performed by the multi-award-winning German dancer Florentina Truempler. The role of the fearsome sorcerer Rothbart is performed by Bulgarian dancer Pavel Kirchev.
